JOB SUMMARY: Operates various types of equipment including tractors, trenchers, vibrator plows, back hoes, boring equipment, dump trucks, lift trucks, bulldozers, and other equipment as necessary for the installation and maintenance of telecommunications cables and conduits.
This includes right-of-way clearing and final clean-up operations.
Works on telecommunications construction project, usually working in a utility capacity, but transferring from one task to another demands worker with varied experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: (include but are not limited to) Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, boring rig, bulldozer, excavators, trenchers, vibrator plows, tractors, dump trucks, lift trucks as well as any other equipment needed to perform the job Adheres to safety practices to ensure safe operation of all equipment and vehicles Loads, transports, and unloads equipment and materials to and from job site Positions blocks, tie ropes, and binders around items and equipment to secure cargo during transit Operates lift truck for the placement of aerial telecommunications facilities Moves levers and depresses pedals to maneuver equipment and raise, lower, and tilt attachments to clear right-of-ways, dig trenches, plow cables, back fill trenches, and perform earth boring operations as necessary Installs appurtenances and other fixtures such as poles, pedestals, hand-holes, anchors, and guy wires as specified Places cables and conduits into trenches and feeds cables and conduits into vibrator plow and/or boring rig when necessary Greases, oils, and performs minor repairs on all equipment Inspects truck equipment such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, and water Performs emergency roadside repairs such as changing tires Connects hydraulic hoses, belts, mechanical linkage, or power takeoff shaft to the various types of equipment to provide power to raise, lower, or tilt attachments Drives truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials such as sand, gravel, crushed rock, limestone, and dirt as necessary Maintains truck log according to state and federal regulations Perform some civil work such as set concrete forms, footings, pour and finish concrete KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Full understanding of operation of all construction equipment currently under responsibility Basic familiarity with the costs and benefits of newer technologies and of equipment in the construction industry Ability to interpret outside plant facility schematics Understanding of REA guidelines with respect to construction units and definitions Advanced knowledge of OSHA requirements for proper excavation and shoring techniques Intermediate to advanced understanding of OSHA requirements for all other aspects of telecommunications facility construction Ability to recognize when construction equipment needs maintenance or repairs, and suggest the most cost-effective remedies to the problems Ability to recognize performance obstacles to production and recommend adjustments to remedy Understanding of, and ability to apply basic principles of communication facility installation techniques, operation of heavy equipment, and efficient time and human resource management to insure prompt and cost-efficient project completion Ability to exhibit diplomacy when dealing with others Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of organization and departmental policy Uses written policies and seeks interpretation from the OSPE Manager and Human Resources when ambiguous Disseminates information to all relevant parties in a timely fashion Identifies and diagnoses issues to ensure achievement of goals Develops a work environment that motivates and maintains a high level of employee performance and morale BEHAVIORS: Upholds and acts in accordance with REV’s Guiding Principles.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with procedures established by the company.
QUALIFICATIONS & PREREQUISITES Required: High School Diploma or equivalent 6 to 12 months related experience and/or training in outside plant construction Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean record Must be able to pass DOTD license certification and TWIC certification if required Proven ability to work effectively both independently and in a team based environment Demonstrates willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities, environments, and adverse weather conditions Adherence to all safety regulations and requirements Preferred: Previous construction crew experience with preference given to those with aerial and/or underground construction backgrounds Valid Louisiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) TWIC Card Previous equipment operation experience GENERAL INFORMATION: This job description does not restrict the company’s right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities of this job at any time.
