General Information Under the direction of the Head of Community Engagement, the Youth Services Specialist assists in the development and implementation of system-wide programs and services for children aged birth to twelve, and teens aged thirteen to eighteen.
This position supports major and branch-level children's and teen's programs through the system, including select outreach events.
May require some night and weekend shifts.
This position has no direct reports.
Duties and Responsibilities Implements the goals and objects of the Department of Community Engagement through the development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services that meet community needs.
Supports the Head of Community Engagement during the planning of all large-scale library events, including but not limited to Comic-Con, Summer Reading Programs, and Livingston Parish Book Festival.
Works with Youth Services Coordinators to plan shared programming and events to be held at multiple library locations.
Provides outreach services to area daycares, preschools, schools, after school programs, camps, and other community groups as needed.
Assists with running children and teen programs at multiple library locations as needed.
Ensures statistics, records, and spreadsheets for children and teen programs are properly maintained and provided to the Head of Community Engagement in a timely manner.
Stays current on present-day library service to youth, on literature for youth, and related popular culture.
Participates on committees and initiatives related to developing programs and services for this age group.
Under the direction of the Head of Community Engagement, develops and maintains relationships with community partners who serve youth residents.
Performs quality and fact checks to ensure departmental standards are being met.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of children's and young adult books and related materials.
Familiarity with developmental needs of children and teens.
Ability to work independently, within the direction of Head of Community Engagement, and on teams.
Initiative to determine and complete needed tasks.
Ability to meet and relate to patrons and staff members in a positive and constructive manner.
Knowledge of computers, automated search methods, and Microsoft Office suite.
Education and/or Work Experience Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree preferred or high school diploma/GED equivalent with a minimum of three years of related work experience in public library event planning and programs.
OR Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC) preferred with a minimum of two years of related work experience in a public library with job duties and responsibilities requiring a level of independent work and thought.
OR Master's of Library and Information Science; or MLIS candidate (currently enrolled) with a minimum of two years of related work experience in a public library.
Special Requirements Valid Louisiana driver's license; or the ability to get one within one month of hire.
